"I Will Have No More to do with this Machinery of Death"
spoken as Illinois Governor George Ryan commuted the sentences of 167 prisoners in January of 2003, calling the system"terribly flawed," after thirteen death row inmates were exonerated by DNA evidence. That number continued to grow to 111 nationwide during 2003. Ryan made national news in 2000 after placing a moratorium on the death penalty in Illinois.
